db.clark DESIGN is the practicing arm of D.B. "Chip" Clark, offering a wide array of design services.
Chip Clark is a multidisciplinary designer, fabricator, and educator. With a passion for architecture and design, he endeavors towards built environments that better the human condition. Trained as an architect, Chip has taught and practiced design worldwide. He earned Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees from Virginia Tech's highly ranked School of Architecture + Design. He returned to Virginia Tech in 2009, teaching foundation and upper-level Design Studios, and courses surrounding topics of Computational Design and Fabrication. Chip became an award-winning Research Assistant Professor pursuing collaborative design research projects that garnered numerous publications, awards, and patents. He was a founding member of the Center for Design Research in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, noted for producing high-profile award-winning Solar Decathlon entries and computational design / build efforts concerned with the intersection of CAD/CAM/CNC workflows, Robotics, and traditional material systems. He is a co-founder of Atelier SRENGISED, a collaborative designers workshop producing works of art and architecture.
In 2016 he developed and managed the Fabrication Laboratories at Kent State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design, housed within a newly completed Weiss/Manfredi building. He worked to integrate pedagogical principles and processes of intelligent making throughout the college's programs, and build a facility which would empower students to further explore design disciplines across numerous scales, mediums, and technologies.
Chip has provided design solutions, consultation, and fabrication services for a diverse range of clients and internationally-recognized projects, specializing in the translation of complex digital forms into fabrication processes. He has collaboratively produced large-scale art projects, through competitive bidding and juried competition award. His design/build work spans from furniture to buildings, and he keeps his hands greasy by maintaining a classic car and motorcycle. Although a longtime academic, he turns to professional practice for the challenge and continued education as an architect / designer through collaborative relationships. Chip’s design practice is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
